New EDI Toolkit empowers researchers to embed inclusive practices
A new online Toolkit is now available to support researchers in integrating Equity/Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) into their work. Developed by C-DICE in collaboration with the Universities of Birmingham, Loughborough, and Nottingham, this resource is open to researchers at any career stage and from any institution.
While the Toolkit’s case studies focus on energy and net zero, the insights and strategies it offers are applicable across a wide range of disciplines.
This interactive, self-guided resource provides flexible and accessible support for building inclusive research practices. Through a blend of foundational guidance and scenario-based learning, it helps users gain confidence in embedding EDI into project planning, funding proposals, and grant applications.
Praised by postdoctoral researchers, academics, and research development managers, the Toolkit stands out for its practical, user-friendly approach.
Getting started is simple: register on the University of Birmingham’s Canvas platform, complete six self-paced modules, and earn a micro-credential badge to showcase your achievement.
A heartfelt thank you to the EDI Fellows, learning development professionals, academics, postdoctoral researchers, and research professionals who contributed to the development and evaluation of this valuable resource.

Dr Swathi Mukundan
I used to think EDI was just academic small talk – something for HR, not the lab. But the Toolkit changed everything. It made me stop mid-pipette and ask, ‘Who exactly am I designing this technology for?’ … I realised EDI isn’t about ticking boxes – it’s about doing better science. My research is now more inclusive, more thoughtful, and ultimately, more impactful.
