National Postdoc Conference 2023 – Call for Abstracts
Postdoctoral researchers are invited to submit a poster or on-demand video content for the National Postdoc Conference 2023. These will be displayed on the On Demand Content section of our website in the run up to NPDC23 – and the posters will join our existing lineup at the conference. The deadline to submit is Friday, 1 September 2023.
This is your last chance to share your work and contribute to this national conference – taking place at Loughborough University on Tuesday 19 September 2023. The theme for NPDC23 is “Transitions and New Horizons”, and it is the only conference in the UK dedicated solely to the celebration of postdoctoral researchers from any university and in any discipline area.
We particularly welcome content that has been created by postdoctoral researchers in a collaborative manner with individuals from multiple partners. To help facilitate this we have created an open call for a special Networking Grant, valued at up to £1,000.
Remember the audience will be predominantly postdoctoral researchers from a wide variety of disciplines, so your submission should be pitched for this audience. We recommend downloading the guidance for presenters to ensure your contribution meet the EDI aims of the event.
On-Demand Content:
On-demand content should be suitable to be shared via the conference website. This content can be delivered in the following ways:
- On-demand video/audio
- Pre-recorded video that is 5-20 minutes long and submitted in MP4 format.
- Audio files that are 5-20 minutes that are converted into MP4 format.
- Video and audio files will be shared via the On Demand Content page on the conference website.
- On-demand blog post
- An opinion piece, around 400-500 words and written in a conversational style.
If you wish to submit on-demand content that will be delivered via a different mechanism, please email cdice-enquiries@lboro.ac.uk including “NPDC23 abstract query” as the subject. At the review stage the Programme Committee may request a change in the delivery mechanism.

Poster:
C-DICE will print the selected posters and display them in the poster hall. A copy of the poster will be made available to view on-demand via an on-line gallery hosted on the NPDC23 website.
Presenters are asked to take note of the following guidelines when producing their poster:
- Posters should be created using the template provided (portrait orientation).
- Please use a large font size on your poster (ideally 24 point or larger).
- Keep text to a minimum.
- Make your poster visually appealing by utilising illustrations, graphics, graphs, charts, and/or tables.
- Ensure contents have a logical flow.
- Make it colourful.
- Participants may remove and collect their posters at the end of the display after 4pm on 19 September. Posters not removed by 5:30pm will be removed and disposed of.
Conference Themes:
We welcome content which relate to the three key themes of the conference:
- Impactful postdoc futures, next steps: Exploring career opportunities open to postdocs across a broad spectrum of employment, including sharing opportunities to develop postdoctoral impact, professional skills, collaborations, and embedding this in postdoctoral employment.
- Celebrating postdoc breakthroughs: Postdocs can often be the unseen and unsung heroes behind advances in knowledge in their field. At NPDC23 we will celebrate the impact and contribution that postdocs have had in creating a better future for us all, with thematic areas around key global challenges linked to the UN sustainable development goals. If you would like to present a poster showcasing your research this is the theme to choose.
- Enabling postdocs through the work environment: We will look at best practice, policy and action around recruiting, sustaining, supporting and retaining postdoctoral talent in the higher education, industry and third sectors, to shift the dial on recognising the role and value of postdocs in advancing research.

- Book the activity to then upload the completed template

This is your chance to share your work and contribute to a national conference – taking place at Loughborough University on Tuesday 19 September 2023. You can submit an idea for a workshop, presentation, on-demand content, or a poster using our online submission portal.
We particularly welcome content that has been created by postdoctoral researchers in a collaborative manner with individuals from multiple partners. To help facilitate this we have created an open call for a special Networking Grant, valued at up to £1,000.
We are looking for a wide range of contributions which should relate to at least one of the main conference themes. Remember the audience will be predominantly postdoctoral researchers from a wide variety of disciplines, so your submission should be pitched for this audience. We recommend downloading the guidance for presenters to ensure your contribution meet the EDI aims of the event.
Presentation Type:
An abstract can be submitted for presentation at the NPDC23 as one of the following categories:
- In-person workshop
- In-person presentation
- On demand content
- Poster
You may submit up to three abstracts as the Presenting Author.
At the review stage, the Programme Committee may advise a change of delivery type, i.e., workshop may be changed to presentation or poster. We will negotiate changes with the Presenting Author on a case-by-case basis. The decision of the programme committee is final.
Presentations must link to one (or more) of the Conference Themes.
Workshop:
Workshops may be between 1 and 2 hours in duration, the expectation is that at least 50% of this session is interactive.
At the review stage, the Programme Committee may request a change in length of the workshop in order for your session to fit with the overall programme.
C-DICE can provide standard workshop supplies such as post-it notes, pens, paper, flipcharts.

Presentation:
Short oral presentations should consist of 15-minute talk followed by 5 minutes for questions and answers (Q & A).
If suitable, your presentation may be combined with one or more other presenters to produce a panel session with a combined Q & A session. You will be informed of this at the review stage.
You may show up to 10 slides during your presentation which will need to be submitted no later than Tuesday 5 September 2023.
On-Demand Content:

Submission Process:
The abstract submission process for NPDC23 will be through completion of a template that is submitted as a PDF or Microsoft Word document via Inkpath.
IMPORTANT: It is ESSENTIAL that you read ALL the instructions below before you submit.
The Presenting Author must submit the abstract and is required to be the corresponding author for that abstract.
Abstracts must be submitted in English.
You do not need to register for NPDC23 prior to submitting an abstract however, you will need to sign-on to Inkpath to upload your abstract.
On acceptance, you will need to register for the conference and indicate your preferences before 30 May 2023.
Guidelines and Templates:
Please adhere to the following guidelines when preparing abstracts for submission for NPDC23. Abstracts that do not adhere to the guidelines will not be reviewed.
How to submit an abstract:
The Presenting Author will be the contact person for the abstract and must submit the abstract.
You will need to download the abstract template and submit it via the C-DICE researcher development platform INKPATH in PDF or Microsoft Word format.

- Title of the abstract (word limit is 15).

- What are the main learning outcomes or take-aways (Do not exceed 100 words).
- How do you plan to engage with the audience? (Do not exceed 100 words).
- Keywords: (3 words relevant to your abstract).

Notification of acceptance:
Notification will be sent to the Presenting Author week commencing 22 May 2023.
When notified of acceptance, the Presenting Author is required to accept their offer by return of email by 30 May 2023. Failure to do so may result in the rejection of their abstract from the programme.
Terms and Conditions:
- The abstract does not exceed 10mbs in size.
- The abstract submitted adheres to the abstract submission guidelines outlined above.
- The text of the abstract along with the names and affiliations, poster, PowerPoint presentations and/or additional documents as requested will be published on the conference website, and that this will not raise any copyright issues.
- A submission as a particular presentation type may be changed to a different type following review in order to be accepted and included in the conference programme.
- Presenters may be recorded for live streaming. A recording of the presentation and a copy of the slides may be published online after the conference.
- It is the responsibility of the Presenting Author to submit the abstract. They are the main contact whose responsibility it is to communicate with other co-authors and ensure that they register to be included in the programme.
- Accepted authors must register by 30 May 2023 to confirm acceptance of their offer in the programme. If accepted authors are not registered by this date, they may be removed from the programme.
- The abstract submitted is in English.
- The Presenting Author of in-person workshops and in-person presentations is available to present at the conference on Tuesday 19 September 2023.
