Are you thinking about leaving academia but not sure where to start? This interactive workshop is designed for researchers, lecturers, and academic professionals exploring careers beyond universities and higher education Led by Dr Naomi Tyrrell – the UK’s leading career coach for academics and an ICF-accredited coach who’s made the leap twice herself – this session goes far beyond generic job advice. You’ll gain fresh insights into:
- The real first steps in a successful transition (hint: it’s not applying for jobs!)
- How to reframe your mindset and build confidence in your transferable skills
- Using your research superpowers and networks to uncover hidden career paths
- Leveraging AI tools to explore and evaluate alternative career options
- Busting common myths about alt-ac (alternative academic) and non-academic roles
This is an energising, reflective session where you’ll actively work through two tailored reflection exercises, set achievable career goals, and have space to ask questions specific to your situation. Whether you’re tentatively exploring or ready to leap, this session gives you clarity, confidence, and concrete next steps.

Presenter biography:
Dr Naomi Tyrrell is the founder of ‘Research Your Way‘ and has over 20 years of research and evaluation experience.
Naomi has led research projects funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, European Commission, British Academy, Leverhulme Trust, University of Plymouth, charitable trusts and the National Lottery. She is currently a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Plymouth.
